The NeoLucida is a portable camera lucida: an optical drawing aid that allows you to trace what you see. Based on century-old designs but comprehensively redesigned for the 21st century, the NeoLucida is perfect for artists, scientists, designers, or hobbyists-anyone who wants to draw.

Originally patented in 1807, by the 1830s camera lucidas were everywhere. Fine artists, scientists, naturalists, explorers, archeologists, architects-all used the camera lucida for drawing in the days before photography.

Our design is lightweight (7oz., or 199 g), sturdy, compact enough to fit in a handbag, highly adjustable, totally non-electronic, and effective in all lighting conditions. If you enjoy drawing from life, or if you're interested in experiencing for yourself how the Old Masters could possibly have created such accurate, lifelike drawings-then the NeoLucida is for you.

Interesting but tiny and hard to use

This is a neat idea, but very challenging to use in its current form. The prism is TINY. So small that it’s difficult to see anything through its itty-bitty slit. The rest of the device — the clamp and gooseneck — is large and cumbersome by comparison. I would enlarge the prism by at least 2x, and slim the support rig by 30%. Will continue to try using it and see if I get used to it.

Great for Tiny, Wobbly Drawings!

I had high hopes for Neo Lucinda. I spend a lot of time painting and drawing, and I’m pretty good, but I spend an awful lot of time getting perfect proportion and perspective. I had hoped this would be a handy tool for portraits and landscape. I’ve only been fooling around with it for a day or so, but it is not easy to use, the instructions are vague, and the results are awfully disappointing. Do I mount it on my left or right? Do I have it upside down? Can I control for the size of the image? Why can’t I see my hand or pencil tip? I’ll keep playing with it, but it feels like $55 down the tube.

Hey there! I'll link a playlist of videos below that may help you out. If you ever need anything else, just reach out to Thanks!

I was surprised by the quality of it at first. This is very well done! It took me some time to figure out how it works, but now I am fine. Just needs time to practice. I might get the bigger version.
